      <image:title>Purpose - Menorah-Tree Structure in Isaiah 28 - 33</image:title>
      <image:caption>In Isaiah, it is proposed that portions of the literary structure have correspondence to a Menorah-Tree structure. Interestingly, these branch-paired Menorah structures appear to be “visually” surrounded by stanzas containing the words “near” and/or “far.” That observation partially explains the focus of the Scriptures tab on the words “near” and “far.” In Isaiah 28 – 33, the branches have correspondence to stanzas starting with the word “woe,” or “ah” in some translations. Being aware of this structure has incredible value to readers because they will understand what pattern Isaiah was following as he wrote his scroll and then can also understand why the text jumps around in tone. However, the text of Isaiah is not random at all, it is highly structured. At this date of writing, this Menorah-Tree literary structure continues to be under review, and reaching consensus may of course take a very long time.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/60215f0753f85f303ac73b14/ff850a81-da4e-4b0c-b62d-6af7dcda7a35/Near_and_Far_bounding_chiasm_d1.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Purpose - The words “near” and “far” are structural markers in Isaiah.</image:title>
      <image:caption>The reason for the focus on the words “near” and “far” is that these words are employed as inclusio-like structural markers in Isaiah. That is, they tend to mark or locate the boundaries of chiastic passages which occur at the multi-stanza level. It is not quite as simple as this figure indicates as there are other verses within Isaiah that provide boundaries in the poetry.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/60215f0753f85f303ac73b14/67134485-5299-449b-9439-deeea647d59b/New_Menorah_Figure_d7.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Purpose - Menorah or tree structures have been proposed to occur in the literary structure of Isaiah.</image:title>
      <image:caption>It has also been proposed Menorah structures occur in the literary structure of Isaiah, and that these Menorah structures are in some cases marked by the words “near” and “far” which “visually surround” the Menorah structures. An initial concept is that specific verses or stanzas in the text of Isaiah have correspondence to the branch structure of a Menorah. There is strong evidence for the tree structures from Scriptures written earlier than Isaiah, from internally in Isaiah, and from Scriptures written after Isaiah. However, further investigation is needed for both the Menorah structures, and Isaiah’s use of the words “near” and “far” in marking these structures. There is more information on the Menorah structures on the Scriptures/Isaiah tab.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About - About the tree images</image:title>
      <image:caption>Trees are awesome! In the Scriptures trees are a common image and are often used as a metaphor for other things. Books have been written on the subject, and elsewhere this webpage might eventually point to books I own and have found helpful. Trees and tree branches against the sky are a beautiful sight, but they are also a reminder of the cross of Christ. Trees can also indicate to us of a much better future when we will see the healing of the nations.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Isaiah</image:title>
      <image:caption>Introduction to Isaiah and Menorah-Tree Structures Composed 700 years before the birth of Christ, Isaiah was writing about the curses of the covenant being poured out on a tree. This is astounding. All of the Scriptures are pointing to a tree, pointing to the cross of Christ. We have a Sovereign God who is a loving God. God did not leave us with uncertainty, and this is in fact one of the central messages of Isaiah, that God was telling us about the coming of His Son long before He was born. There is no doubt of this in the Old Testament, and the coming of Messiah who is our High Priest.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/60215f0753f85f303ac73b14/3b2cc17d-0515-40bc-abe4-358868563e5a/side_by_side_24-35_red_boxed_2023_dec_d6.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Isaiah - Stanza to Menorah Branch Correspondence</image:title>
      <image:caption>The image presents the literary structure side-by-side with a Menorah and connecting lines in between the two, thus presenting the correspondence of stanzas (and their land-region locations) to branches. This data in graphical form is quite detailed for an introductory page, but providing it here gets directly to a larger understanding of the scroll, and points to the incredible capacity of the inspired author Isaiah in the 8th Century BC. We have an amazing heritage in the inspired Scriptures. In the chart on the left of the image, each line represents a stanza. The third column of numbers indicates the verse count of those stanzas, and the red boxes show that the verse count is fold-over or chiastic for the branch pairs. Two key concepts to notice are: 1) the branches are ordered in pairs, the text does not list branches in a left-to-right or right-to-left manner as one might look at a Menorah, and 2) the author Isaiah used “near” and “far” in the text as structural markers, as he did through all of his scroll. There remains a great need for more investigation, and this image is by no means the final. Keep in mind that Isaiah commentaries are often multi-volume works.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/60215f0753f85f303ac73b14/5ec4bcc5-3f6e-41e4-85bf-cc9a1d90380b/Fig_menorah_28_33.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Isaiah - Correspondence of Stanzas to Menorah Structure</image:title>
      <image:caption>The figure shows one of the proposed Menorah or lampstand-tree structures in Isaiah. In a nutshell, it has been proposed that Isaiah’s scroll can be succinctly described as the destruction of the tree of Ancient Israel (Isaiah 28 - 33) via the curses of the covenant, and then after the sacrifice of our Lord in Isaiah 53, a new tree is presented representing the Kingdom of Christ (Isaiah 57:14 - 62:10). In other words, we are metaphorically brought near to a new tree. This new tree can also be thought of as the cross of Christ, because the cross or the tree are representative of the nature of His Kingdom. Isn’t that interesting! Of course, Isaiah is a lengthy book, so there is a much more to be understood.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/60215f0753f85f303ac73b14/1624323816450-L4UVSGRXNXVD3MAQXSCJ/IMG_E8849.JPG</image:loc>
      <image:title>Isaiah - Isaiah was written by a single inspired author.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Unfortunately, the idea that the Book of Isaiah had multiple authors crept in starting with the so called “Higher Criticism.” Commentaries from my Isaiah bookshelf clearly show this division in the literature, and it is very evident on the internet. Generally, when something like this happens, something fundamental has been missed. Indeed, not enough attention has been paid to literary structure, and therefore basic things have been missed!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Deuteronomy - Basic Arrangement of Deuteronomy</image:title>
      <image:caption>The structure of Deuteronomy is complex. In general, there are three main theories for the structure of Deuteronomy: 1) the discourse or speeches idea, 2) ideas stemming from a comparison to other ancient writings called Suzerain Vassal Treaties, and 3) ideas built up from chiastic and other structures in the book. Basic information on the first two ideas can be found in the Zondervan Pictorial Encyclopedia of the Bible. References on those are provided in a forthcoming book. In a couple of the downloadable Bible studies, an emphasis is placed on a break or transition between Deuteronomy 11:25 and 11:26. Please understand that viewing an otherwise unmarked location as a transition can be helpful to readers of Deuteronomy. Also, the studies help highlight the importance of the words “near” and “far,” and the context of those words in Deuteronomy and the rest of the Torah.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Topical_Approach - How should the teaching of Isaiah be approached from a topical perspective?</image:title>
      <image:caption>This free downloadable PDF summarizes the standard approaches to the teaching of Isaiah, and then presents an alternative path based upon the two intended theme lines of the author Isaiah, as can be elucidated from a structural understanding of the book. This PDF is based on an extract of an appendix from a forthcoming book.</image:caption>

      <image:title>A Fundamental Disconnect - A Fundamental Disconnect</image:title>
      <image:caption>You might be a teacher or pastor asking yourself, “How should I approach the teaching of Isaiah?” It is an important question, because in depth coverage of Isaiah could require more than a year. There is a fundamental disconnect in the way Isaiah has been taught, and this includes the concern that individuals are not being taught how to read it. For more information on this, get the download “How to Topically Approach Teaching of Isaiah.” This covers the ways in which Isaiah is typically approached, and then suggests a better alternative.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Psalm22 - Structure of Psalm 22</image:title>
      <image:caption>Having proposed that verses containing the Hebrew root words for “near” and “far” tend to mark the borders of chiastic units in Isaiah, it is a reasonable question to ask if this happens anywhere else in the Scriptures. The answer is an emphatic yes! This occurs in Psalm 22, and there is support for this in the literature. Our focus again here is purely structural. If you have never studied this Psalm of David before, you really ought to, since it is prophetic of Christ. Christ quotes from Psalm 22 on the cross. Good sources to help study Psalm 22 would include Volume I of the 3 volume set by Charles Spurgeon, and a brief presentation is given in the book by Patrick Reardon: Spurgeon, H. C., “The Treasury of David” Hendrickson Publishers, Peabody, Massachusetts, ISBN 0-917006-25-9. <image:title>I_BS1 - Isaiah Bible Study 1</image:title>
      <image:caption>Isaiah Bible Study 1 is a structural Bible study focusing on the chiastic nature of the verse counts of stanzas. Starting in Isaiah 28 might seem unusual, and it would be for a study of the book, but it is an excellent place to start to understand structure. Different English Bible translations show or format the stanza structures in different ways, and often stanzas are selected differently. Stanza boundaries are a decision of the translation committee. In many Bible’s the break between stanzas is shown with just a slight extra space between verses. For this particular structural study, the NASB and NKJV translations are useful. Have a favorite Bible, but if you can, purchase many inexpensive paperback Bibles from many translations and compare them, or study with someone who has a different translation.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Keep in mind that while 1 and 2 Chronicles were written or compiled after Isaiah’s time, Solomon’s temple dedication prayer was spoken well prior to Isaiah’s time. The temple dedication was a key event in the history of Ancient Israel, and there is no doubt that this prayer would have been preserved and read by subsequent generations (just like people in the U.S. cherish their constitution or the Declaration of Independence). Therefore, Isaiah would have been familiar with this prayer.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The unit of Isaiah 50:9 – 51:8 is structurally significant because it is directly adjacent to the proposed chiastic unit of Isaiah 49:14 – 50:8, and thus as chiastic units they mutually support each other. More importantly, these units, for historical reasons, have bearing on the single inspired authorship of Isaiah, the identity of the suffering servant, and the interfaith dialogue. For help with the analysis in the paper found under the link below, the note should be read in conjunction with explanation of the analysis given under the math presentation, found under the Parents and Youth Group page found on the Resources Tab of this website.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Near and Far - Menorah-Tree Structure in Isaiah 28 - 33</image:title>
The seven verse length stanzas, in the yellow colored boxes, employ the words “near” and/or “far.” Being aware of this structure has incredible value to readers because they will understand what pattern Isaiah was following as he wrote his scroll and then can also understand why the text jumps around in tone. However, the text of Isaiah is not random at all, it is highly structured. At this date of writing, this Menorah-Tree literary structure continues to be under review, and reaching consensus may of course take a very long time.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Near and Far - The words “near” and “far” are structural markers in Isaiah.</image:title>
      <image:caption>The reason for the focus on the words “near” and “far” is that these words are employed as inclusio-like structural markers in Isaiah. That is, they tend to mark or locate the boundaries of chiastic passages which occur at the multi-stanza level. It is not quite as simple as this figure indicates as there are other verses such as “Hymn” verses within Isaiah that provide boundaries in the poetry.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Alternate_Tree - Menorah or tree structures have been proposed to occur in the literary structure of Isaiah.</image:title>
      <image:caption>This figure provides another view of how stanzas or verses have correspondence to branches in a Menorah pattern. It has also been proposed Menorah structures occur in the literary structure of Isaiah, and that these Menorah structures are in some cases marked by the words “near” and “far” which “visually surround” the Menorah structures. An initial concept is that specific verses or stanzas in the text of Isaiah have correspondence to the branch structure of a Menorah. There is strong evidence for the tree structures from Scriptures written earlier than Isaiah, from internally in Isaiah, and from Scriptures written after Isaiah. However, further investigation is needed for both the Menorah structures, and Isaiah’s use of the words “near” and “far” in marking these structures.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Revelation - The Revelation Tree</image:title>
      <image:caption>Because the Menorah-tree has not been recognized in Isaiah, the 4 – 2 – 1 tree pattern has not been recognized in Revelation. The pattern in Revelation is observed among the seven seals, seven trumpets, and seven bowls, (see Hendriksen, More Than Conquerors, page 19; G.K. Beale, The Book of Revelation, specifically the chart on page 128 but p.116 – 128; or Dennis Prutow, The Visions of Revelation, page 124). Although many have observed this pattern, to my knowledge it has not been connected to the the Menorah-tree in Isaiah. The picture on the right (or above) presents just two of the many parallelisms, drawn in the same branch-paired Menorah-tree arrangement as found in Isaiah and elsewhere in the Scriptures. This tree in Isaiah is very significant context for Revelation that appears to have been completely missed. This is a lampstand-tree in the Heavenly Temple. However, make sure you understand the tree pattern in the Old Testament first before joining this investigation of Revelation.</image:caption>

      <image:title>books_portfolio-3 - Book Four - ISAIAH REVISITED was written to help individuals read Isaiah! This structural commentary will enable you to quickly find the original or natural breaks in the Biblical text and comprehend their purpose. The parallel and chiastic (or fold-over) literary structures in Isaiah are presented in an easy-to-read format with the large passages shown on opposing pages so that the entire pattern can be seen at once. Words Isaiah employed in a structural manner are underlined, and word evidence for the chiastic nature of the passages is also made highly visible. The book is for new Christians, Bible Study leaders, serious readers of the Scriptures, seminary students, and pastors preparing for the teaching of Isaiah. Seventy percent of the after-tax proceeds are flowing to a nonprofit to enable further investigation of Biblical structures.</image:title>

      <image:caption>Isaiah is an extremely difficult book to comprehend. The book begins by providing a broad introduction to the Ancient Temple in Jerusalem, and then primarily focuses on the literary structure of Isaiah 28 – 35, one of the most difficult portions of Isaiah to understand. Make sure you get the second edition. The Amazon site typically continues to list earlier editions even when they have been replaced.</image:caption>

      <image:title>books_portfolio-3 - Book Two - The Near and Far Theme and the Literary Structure of Isaiah</image:title>
      <image:caption>This 2018 book is a highly detailed and technical book intended for primarily a pastoral and theologian audience specifically invested in study of Isaiah. It is actually two books in one, a demonstration for the existence of the tree literary structure in Isaiah applying evidence throughout the Scriptures, and then a proposal for the chiastic passages in Isaiah. The ordinary reader can clearly benefit (mostly from Chapter 5), but it is not easy or uplifting reading, and you will probably want to skip over the Bayesian inference applied in the argument portion of the book. The link below will open the description of this book on Amazon.com on a separate window in your browser.</image:caption>

      <image:title>books_portfolio-3 - Book Three - Forthcoming Study Guide</image:title>
      <image:caption>This forthcoming book takes a completely fresh approach to Bible Studies, providing a focus on the structural nature of Isaiah. It was written several years ago, edited a couple years back, and then taken through a beta test study group in around June of 2019. It needs to have a companion text which provides a more general introduction. When that is done, both books will be published. A decent cover will be put on this book and then made generally available at that time if not sooner.</image:caption>
